Organisation number

The nine-digit number that identifies a business in Norway.

The organisation number is assigned by the Central Coordinating Register for Legal Entities on registration. It never changes, and it is not reissued to anyone else after the entity is deleted.

Nine digits, no letters. The last digit is a check digit computed with modulus 11, so a mistyped number can be rejected without a lookup. Every registered entity has one: limited companies, sole proprietorships, associations, foundations and municipalities alike.

Sub-units — what everyday speech calls a branch or an outlet — have their own organisation number, different from the parent's. That is the most common confusion.
